Introducing THE BURIAL TIDE by Neil Sharpson - com Introducing THE BURIAL TIDE by Neil Sharpson - coming September 9, 2025!

A woman who can’t remember her death. An island with a terrible secret. A past that refuses to stay buried.

Mara Fitch, a woman with no memory, claws her way out of her grave and back to life on Inishbannock. Here, an eerily quiet island off the coast of Ireland, strange misshapen figures watch from the trees and the roads are covered in teeth. Two brothers gamble for nothing, the doctor only treats one patient, and the pub owner speaks in riddles. A poet loses and finds his soul. And a man without a heart claims he’s the key to unlocking Mara’s secrets.

As Mara returns to her life on this upside-down island, her memories begin to leech their way back to the surface. The more she remembers, the more the village will do anything to stop her...

But the sea remembers it all.

Drawing on the creatures and horrors of Irish folklore, THE BURIAL TIDE unearths our darkest truths: how far we’d go to win our freedom, and how quickly our desires can become monstrous.

We're kicking things off with a giveaway - 5 lucky readers will each receive an advanced reading copy of THE BURIAL TIDE!

Today is Lorraine Hansberry's birthday! @jayleslie Today is Lorraine Hansberry's birthday! @jaylesliebooks, author of WHAT I MUST TELL THE WORLD — our picture book biography about Lorraine's life and legacy — wrote:

"Lorraine Hansberry was an iconic writer who refused to be silenced — her voice rang out across the world.

I was drawn to Lorraine's story because Lorraine was proud to be different. She was a female journalist when most were men. She was an African-American playwright when only white names headlined Broadway. She was a woman who loved women even though New York City declared it illegal. Yet none of these challenges stopped her. In fact, they inspired her to speak up louder.

Like Lorraine, you can speak out for what you believe in. Your words are powerful, and your voice is strong.

Although Lorraine is no longer with us, her stories continue to live in our hearts. So don't be afraid to tell your own story. It can change the world."

WHAT I MUST TELL THE WORLD, a Stonewall Honor Book for Children’s Literature, is available wherever you find your books!

We have OLD SCHOOL INDIAN author @mohawkmiami’s We have OLD SCHOOL INDIAN author @mohawkmiami’s uncle, Alex Jacobs, to thank for the beautiful work of art featured on the book cover — it’s based on a quilt portrait of his called “Santa Fe Dude”:

“Uncle Alex never categorized his art. He occupied Wounded Knee in 1973 as part of the White Roots of Peace, was program director for the Mohawk Nation Radio (CKON 97.3) in the 80s, and fronted Tribal Dada, a Punk Funk Groove Performance Band in the 90s. He co-founded, edited, and wrote for two of Indian Country’s most important newspapers – Akwesasne Notes and Indian Time. For 30 years, Akwesasne Notes had the largest circulation of any Indigenous-owned newspaper, and Indian Time, which ran from March 3rd 1969 to December 19th 2024, was the longest-running Indigenous-owned newspaper. He’s had two chapbooks of poetry published. He might never be a household name, but Uncle Alex has managed to live off nothing but his creative endeavors for more than fifty years.

I have two of his quilt portraits on my walls, but “Santa Fe Dude” has always been my favorite – fifteen fabrics touched by our family layered into a portrait of a badass Mohawk, laid over sheets of uncut cigarette wrappers that symbolize how capitalism commodifies Native culture. The original is lost at the moment, sold to a collector who has since passed on.

When the folks at @hillmangrad and Zando asked me what I envisioned for the cover of my debut novel, I sent them a picture of “Sante Fe Dude.” The first time I saw the cover mockup, I broke down crying. Of course, then I had to ask Uncle Alex for his permission. When he granted it, it seemed like fate. I feel blessed that my uncle – the artist I looked up to as a child, whose life served as a model for chasing my own dreams – gave me this cover.”
